GORGET (Gorge, the throat, French)A word applied to various articles of costume, both civil and military. For military use there were numerous varieties both of chain and plate. A long, loose upper garment; a lady's dress; a kind of open cloak worn by clergymen, members of the legal profession, university professors, and other educational officials; the degree gown has a hood of silk, the colour of which signifies the kind of degree and the university from which the degree has been obtained. In the 14th century the word " gown " was applied to garments of various materials for both men's and women's wear, they had high collars which buttoned close round the neck. 20 Alpaca Cloth
The name is derived from the Spanish term for the Vicuna. The wool is mixed with silk or cotton and the yarn woven into a thin durable cloth for both men's and women's wear. Sir Titus Salt introduced the wool into Yorkshire, and it is now used for the manufacture of alpacas, lustres, silk warp alpaca, alpaca mixtures, mohair linings and numerous other cloths.
